Aluminum Picket Railing System by Kane Innovations Receives Outstanding Structural Testing Report

ERIE, Pennsylvania – December 12, 2016 – Last week, architectural products manufacturer, Kane Innovations, Inc., received a glowing test report from an internationally accredited testing laboratory for their Contemporary aluminum picket railing system. The purpose of the test was to evaluate the structural performance of the guardrail to support criteria outlined in the International Code Council Evaluation Service (ICC-ES), Section AC273, Acceptance Criteria for Handrails and Guards. The test simulated how the railing would handle a 90-degree bracket loading condition when subjected to a specific situation.

The impressive test results defined the process in which Sterling Dula’s Contemporary railing system withheld 1,000 pounds of force for the duration of the two minute test, with post welds remaining intact. The test concluded that Sterling Dula’s railing system exceeded the safety factor by four times the necessary requirement of 200 pounds. Comparatively speaking, that’s more force in pounds than a grand piano or an Arabian horse.

The test concluded that Sterling Dula’s railing system exceeded the safety factor by four times the necessary requirement of 200 pounds. Comparatively speaking, that’s more force in pounds than a grand piano or an Arabian horse.

In March, Kane Innovations’ Engineering Manager, Mark Kightlinger, witnessed the structural testing in-person. He said that although the three-line picket railing’s remarkable performance was not a surprise, it was still exciting to see the Contemporary system far exceed ICC-ES AC273 testing criteria.

“I never once doubted that our Contemporary railing would exceed test standards, based on my 15 years of experience with the product. Still, experiencing the test process first-hand was very interesting,” he said. “These tests only confirmed what we already knew: that Kane Innovations provides only high quality, durable railing systems.”

Kightlinger said that arrangements are currently being made to test other Kane Innovations’ Sterling Dula brand railing systems, such as the popular Chesterfield glass railing.

“Currently, Kane Innovations is in the process of pursuing a Code Compliance Research Report (CCRR) on our Chesterfield glass railing system and undergoing testing to exceed the ICC-ES AC439 criteria,” he said. “Kane is also in the process of testing the Chesterfield for Miami-Dade County certification.”

Mark Kightlinger said that, ultimately, the structural performance tests are conducted for customer peace of mind and end-user safety.

“These types of tests will ensure that architects, engineers and contractors are furnished with railing products from Kane Innovations that far exceed their safety needs,” he said.

“After all, there’s a reason we’re referred to as the ‘Guardians of Safe Environments’.”
