Kane’s Stainless Steel Sterling Dula Railing Part of Six-Station, $6.8-Billion-Dollar, Washington, DC Transportation Project

When done correctly, windscreens are as functional as they are beautiful.  However, there are a few important points to remember when designing these unique systems for a rooftop terrace, pool deck, or other high-level, outdoor common area.

TIP #1:  Mounting Conditions are Critical

ERIE, Pennsylvania – June 27, 2016 – Phase II of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s (WMATA) Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project, a $6.8-billion-dollar design-build effort, will feature Sterling Dula brand custom stainless steel railing from architectural products manufacturer, Kane Innovations.  Capital Rail Constructors, a joint venture of Clark Construction Group, LLC and Kiewit Infrastructure South Company, will install eleven different variations of Sterling Dula railing on six new stations. The stations will be known as Reston Town Center, Herndon, Innovation Center, Dulles Airport, Loudoun Gateway and Ashburn.

Once completed, the second phase track will run 11.4 miles from the Wiehle-Reston East Station to the future Ashburn station site.  Structures, such as a maintenance facility – plus systems, tracks and a rail yard – are also planned along the extension.   An already fully-operational “Silver Line Phase I”, opened to the public on July 26, 2014.

Railing types include Sterling Dula’s custom, stainless steel, one-line railing with mesh and illuminated grab rail, an 11-line pipe railing, an interior glass railing for use at the Dulles Airport location, and much more.  Each stainless steel component will be finished using a number four longitudinal polishing technique.

“It’s a great testament to Kane’s people and products that we’ve been selected as the railing manufacturer for one of the largest metropolitan expansion projects in the country,” said Mac Hines, Kane Innovations’ Vice President of Sales. “Users of the Silver Line Metrorail will enjoy Kane’s product for many years to come, which is a truly exciting prospect.”

This momentous project will take roughly three more years to complete.  All Sterling Dula railing is expected to be installed in full on the east, west and airport segments by 2019.

Kane Innovations has completed work on other public transportation and civil construction jobs over the years, including seven Long Island Rail Road stations for New York’s Metropolitan Transit Authority, and the Morgan Street Bridge project in Chicago for the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT).
