INTERIOR STRUCTURAL GLASS STAIR RAIL FROM KANE INNOVATIONS’ STERLING DULA BRAND CAPTURES THE MODERN ESSENCE OF THIS NEW CORPORATE HEADQUARTERS BUILDING.
When Sheetz, Inc., a convenience-store retailer, decided to relocate their headquarters 19 miles south of Altoona to Claysburg, PA, the company quickly began formulating their vision for an employee-focused, progressive and sustainable building design.
The architect of record, CDI Studio One, listed Kane Innovations’ Sterling Dula brand as a preferred structural glass railing manufacturer within the project specifications. After Kane was awarded the job, Poole Anderson Construction collaborated with Sterling Dula estimators and engineers to perfect a railing system design that would work perfectly with Sheetz’s plans for a three-story central staircase.
The design was executed with half-inch clear, tempered, laminated glass placed inside a 2″ square glazing channel and finished with a square top rail. A 1-1/2″ schedule 40 aluminum pipe was used for the grab rail.
Noteworthy building features include a large, southern-facing porch that allows employees to experience nature during the workday, first-floor test kitchens for Sheetz’s own Made-To-Order (MTO) specialty food, a dining room with exposed timber columns and a natural stone, gas-burning fireplace situated along an outside wall. The most impressive attribute of the property, however, is the adjacent daycare center which includes a family conference room, stroller storage, a children’s library, plus classrooms for infants and preschoolers. Each classroom features an exterior door leading to a fenced, natural play area.
Sheetz operates over 500 convenience stores in the northeastern United States with a workforce totaling over 17,000 employees.
