Starke County Sheriff’s Office and Justice Center

STARKE COUNTY JAIL WAS PLAGUED WITH OVERCROWDING ISSUES IN A DETERIORATING FACILITY.

So when the time finally came to move forward with plans for a larger, more advanced justice center, county officials approached design firm, DLZ, to make the project a reality. The jail committee, along with the sheriff, jail staff, and construction management firm, The Skillman Corporation, worked collectively to develop the $14 million project in 2012. Construction began in November of the following year.

Installer and detention equipment contractor, Pauly Jail Building Company, collaborated with Kane Innovations to ensure that all physical security needs were met for the 47,500 square foot, 145-bed detention center. Kane supplied Vantage Wall Mezzanine Barriers in common areas to protect inmates from accidental falls and suicide attempts, Steel Van-Guard Security Screens to deter escape, and a total of over 5,300 square feet of tamper-resistant steel and stainless steel Security Plank Ceilings to reduce ambient noise and eliminate the transfer of contraband.

The radial design – which supports central supervision by corrections personnel – includes eight classification areas, a courtroom, a visitation room, a booking and intake area, recreation areas, and laundry and kitchen facilities that have been sized to accommodate future expansion.

Fully operational in May 2015, the completed Starke County Sherrif’s Office and Justice Center proved nothing short of an efficient, effective, and safe space, with help from Kane Innovations’ tried and trusted security and detention products.
